If anyone doubted Obama’s judgment or wisdom, this puts those doubts to rest. Four more years!

Ben and others,
I’m new to the site — recommended from my college chum, Ryan “Big Gums” Tennis. Really enjoyed some of the previous posts, especially the science/religion conversations. I’m a grad student in biology at Johns Hopkins, so I feel I may have some opinions/facts to contribute in the future.
Anywho, this subject seemed as good as any to discuss, especially since I’m a huge ‘Canes fan, and a fan of college football in general. I’m not in favor of an eight team playoff, though I am becoming in favor of a “plus one” system. I understand the people that like having the satisfaction of everything being decided on the field, but I’m worried about a sport that I care about looking too much like the NFL. A couple points: 1) I know games like “Ohio State/Michigan 2006″ and “Texas Tech/Texas 2008″ will always mean a ton for the fans of those schools, but the importance of these games nationally will matter less. 2) Teams will schedule even weaker OOC games than they do now. If strength of schedule doesn’t matter, you lack the incentive of matching up with teams from other “big” conferences. 3) I would hate to see teams resting starters at the end of the year to gear up for a playoff run (a la the NFL) or the inevitable argument about who is number 8 instead of who is number 1. Anyway, I know I’m in the minority, and I care way too much about this, but good to be here, guys and gals.

yeah, I hear you, and those all could very well be some mitigating factors. I just think that a playoff would make it SO much more exciting, that it makes for all of those things. Currently, I really don’t think anybody gives a flying crap about any bowl game that isn’t the championship, and even the championship game is often given an asterisk because people think somebody else deserved to be there. Plus, I think strength of schedule still WOULD matter. They could do the BCS system exactly the same, it’s just that it would be used to determine the top 8 teams at the end of the year instead of the top 2.

Hey Gang: I couldn’t possibly tell you who/what would be the best games and teams and individual players, but as an ex owner of a sports bar I distinctly remember that last years bowl game line ups were all named after —- CORPORATIONS —– so doesn’t that throw a huge wrench in the wheel by eliminating some of these corporate sponsorships? Eight is NOT enough. And, also, doesn’t every college want to play in some bowl? Take your pick: The Mieneke Bowl (and get your car serviced) or the PapaJohn’s (pizza at the concession) or the Sheraton Hawaii (and get a tan, too!) But, we have an economic crisis going on so don’t we need to keep the wheels of commerce going? Call me old fashioned or just plain old but when I was a kid it was:
the Orange Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Sugar Bowl, and the Rose Bowl. And, that was back in the time when not every player got a ribbon on the team, they all got one shared trophy.
